Hi! I’m
mary barone
I’m an Industrial Design student at DAAP, having transferred after a year in Communication Design. That early training still informs my work. I bring a strong focus on composition, clarity, and intent - translating visual thinking into physical form.
I care deeply about equity, accessibility, and sustainability. I also pay close attention to the quieter details: how something feels in your hand, how it fits into your routine, and how it earns its place in someone’s life.
Right now, I’m looking for a Fall 2025 Co-Op with a team that values thoughtful, human-centered work—and where I can keep learning by doing!
my design journey…
ART
I fell in love with painting, drawing, and writing at a young age. I found it to be such a powerful way to express myself and connect with others. At the time, I had no idea that the design field existed where I would be able to turn my love for art and storytelling into a career.
journalism
I joined my school’s journalism program in high school, where I honed in on my interviewing, researching, writing, and graphics. My senior year I was made graphics and art editor; I really began to learn the importance of visual communication, rather than just making things that look pretty.
communication design
In 2022 I came to DAAP in the Communication Design program. I spent a year studying typography, photography, and 2-dimensional design visuals.
industrial design
After a year, I transitioned to Industrial Design to pursue my passion for creating tangible objects. Since making the switch, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for physical prototyping, model making, and sketching - areas where creativity and hands-on problem solving come to life.
chamberlain group
I worked in Chicago as a UX/UI Co-Op with Chamberlain Group, strengthening my design and collaboration skills. The city’s architecture and culture also deepened my perspective and influenced my growth as a designer. (Design work is password-protected, but I’m happy to share in an interview.)
what’s next?
I am interested in nearly every facet of design and I love the process of learning. In future Co-Ops, I would love to learn more about materiality, manufacturing, and further develop my sketching and design style.
